PITTSBURGH - Duquesne head men's basketball coach Danny Nee named Glenn Gutierrez coordinator of men's basketball operations in the first of two coaching staff changes announced today. In addition, Rodney Perry, who served as DU's operations coordinator for the past two seasons, has been named assistant coach. Perry replaces John Mahoney who left Duquesne to become the Director of Men's Basketball Operations at West Virginia this week. (see below)
Gutierrez comes to Duquesne after serving as an assistant coach for Jim Boone at Eastern Michigan for the past five seasons. Prior to that he was an assistant under Boone at Robert Morris (1996-00) and California University of Pennsylvania (1987-96).
"I'm happy to have Glenn and his nearly 10 years of Division I experience as part of our staff," said Nee. "He is a quality person who will do a quality job at Duquesne."
At EMU, Gutierrez served as the coordinator of scouting and recruiting, organized and coordinated film exchanges and breakdowns and served as the academic liaison in addition to handling a number of administrative office duties. He will head video operations and handle additional administrative responsibilities in his new position at Duquesne.
The 42-year-old Williamstown, W.Va. native began his college coaching career with one-year stints at Winthrop and Charleston Southern before joining Boone's staff at California in 1987. He coached at Cal through 1996, before moving on to Robert Morris with Boone for the 1996-97 season.
Gutierrez, who was an all-state basketball player at Williamstown High School in 1980, went on to become a three-year starter and team captain at West Liberty State College where he completed his bachelor's degree in 1985. He added a master's from California in 1989. Guiterrez and his wife, Ragan, have two daughters, Madison (5) and Meredith (3).
The 35-year-old Perry, who joined Duquesne's staff prior to the 2003-04 season, will assume assistant coaching duties immediately.
"Rodney has proven to me that he is ready to fill the assistant coach position," said Nee. "He is an excellent teacher who will bring a lot of intensity and enthusiasm to the practice floor."
West Virginia Hires John Mahoney

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – John Mahoney, a college and high school coaching veteran of more than 20 years, has been named Director of Men's Basketball Operations, WVU Coach John Beilein announced today. Mahoney replaces Bill Lilly, who left earlier this summer to become the head coach at West Virginia Wesleyan.
A native of Burgettstown, Pa., Mahoney's duties will include administrative responsibilities and video operations for the men's basketball program.
"We're very excited about adding John Mahoney to our basketball staff," says Beilein. "I've been very fortunate to make the right selections for my staff during my career, and I'm confident that John will be no different."
Mahoney comes to West Virginia from Duquesne, where he spent the last four years as an assistant coach on Danny Nee's staff. Prior to his stint at Duquesne, Mahoney was an assistant under Nee and Jim Boone at Robert Morris for three years.
The Burgettstown High School graduate began his coaching career at Our Lady of Sacred Heart High School in Coraopolis, Pa., where he served as boys' head coach from 1984-94. In addition to winning the school's first three sectional titles, Mahoney led OLSH to the WPIAL Class A finals twice. He was inducted to the OLSH Hall of Fame in 2003.
Mahoney then served as the head coach at Mount Aloysius College from 1994-98. While at Mount Aloysius, he was instrumental in the school's move from junior college to the NAIA level. He left for Robert Morris following the 1998 season as the school's winningest coach.
The 44-year-old Mahoney completed his undergraduate degree in business/information technology from Phoenix. Mahoney and his wife, Mary, have a son, Dolan (8).
